How to Choose an Ebook Reading App for EPUB and PDF
Compare practical reading-app features before choosing how to open your digital books.
Start with the actual file type
Check whether your books arrive as EPUB, PDF or another format. A reading app that supports EPUB may not display fixed-layout PDFs comfortably, and some files require a particular account or service.
Look at the app's published format support and test with a legitimately obtained sample before importing an entire library.
Test readability and accessibility
Try font resizing, dark mode, contrast, text-to-speech or screen-reader features if you need them. Reflowable EPUB often provides more adjustable text than a fixed-page PDF.
Accessibility depends on both the app and how the ebook file was made. A scanned PDF without selectable text may remain difficult to navigate even in a capable reader.
Check privacy and offline access
Review whether the app uploads files to cloud storage, requires sign-in or allows local-only reading. Confirm which features work without an internet connection.
Avoid granting broad file permissions to unfamiliar apps when a trusted device reader already meets your needs.
Try navigation and backups
Open a sample chapter, create a bookmark, search for a phrase and test whether reading progress persists after closing the app.
Keep a separate permitted backup of the original file. An app's reading history is not a substitute for retaining the purchased file and receipt.
