Ebook Formats for Kindle, Kobo and Apple Books

EPUB, PDF and audio files do not behave the same on every reading device. Use this device-by-device guide before choosing or transferring an ebook file.

The short answer

EPUB is usually the strongest choice for text-heavy books because the text can reflow as the screen or font size changes. PDF preserves a fixed page layout, which can be useful for worksheets, illustrated documents and reference material. Audio requires a compatible player or app and should be confirmed separately from the ebook file.

Device support also depends on how the file reaches the device. Amazon currently lists EPUB and PDF among the formats supported by Send to Kindle. Kobo lists EPUB and PDF support on its eReaders. Apple says Books on Mac can import many EPUB books, PDFs and supported audiobook files, while PDFs open in Preview or the chosen default PDF reader on Mac.

    Kindle: check the transfer method

Amazon’s current help documentation recommends Send to Kindle for wireless transfer and lists EPUB, PDF, DOC, DOCX, TXT, RTF, HTML and common image files among the supported types. The service currently accepts files up to 200 MB.

Support for a file type does not guarantee that every layout will look identical after conversion. Text-heavy EPUB files usually adapt better than fixed-layout documents, while PDFs may require zooming on smaller screens.

    • Use Send to Kindle for a supported personal document transfer.
    • Preview image-heavy or fixed-layout files after transfer.
    • Keep the original file as a backup.

Kobo: broad EPUB and PDF support

Kobo’s official format list includes EPUB, EPUB2, EPUB3, PDF, FlePub and MOBI for Kobo eReaders and the desktop app. Older Kobo models can have narrower EPUB3 support, so check the exact device when advanced formatting matters.

Kobo also explains that DRM-protected EPUB or PDF files may require Adobe Digital Editions. A file extension alone does not tell you whether DRM or another access step applies.

    • Confirm the exact Kobo model for advanced EPUB3 features.
    • Check whether the file uses Adobe DRM.
    • Use a reflowable EPUB when adjustable text is the priority.

Apple Books on Mac: import EPUB, PDF and supported audio

Apple’s Books guide says users can import content that did not come from the Book Store, including many EPUB books, PDFs, MP3 audiobooks and Audible audiobooks. Some protected formats, including ACSM, AZW and ODM, require the associated third-party app.

Apple also notes that PDFs open in Preview or the chosen default PDF reader on Mac. That difference matters when a buyer expects every file to behave like a reflowable book inside one app.

    • Use EPUB for adjustable text when the file and app support it.
    • Use PDF when preserving the original page layout matters.
    • Check protected file types before assuming they will import directly.

Choose EPUB or PDF by reading task

Choose EPUB when you want font controls, reflowable text and a reading experience that adapts to different screens. Choose PDF when page position, charts, worksheets or visual composition need to stay fixed.

For phones and smaller eReaders, a dense PDF can be uncomfortable because the page does not automatically reflow. For manuals, forms and illustrated references, the fixed layout may still be the better tradeoff.

    • Novels and text-heavy books: start with EPUB.
    • Worksheets and fixed visual layouts: consider PDF.
    • Listening: verify the actual audio file and playback app separately.

What to verify before buying MindBloc Reader

The current MindBloc Reader offer describes EPUB, PDF and audio content for a one-time price of $10.99. That does not mean every item is available in every format or that every file behaves the same on every device.

Before purchasing, identify the device you plan to use, the format you prefer and any exact title that matters to you. The live Reader page remains the source for the current offer, access details and checkout terms.

    • Confirm your preferred format.
    • Check the app or device import method.
    • Verify any exact title that is essential to your decision.
    • Keep Reader access separate from Reseller rights.
